Entries to the OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO are open and it’s not too late to enter the 2018 edition of this popular event in Cyprus, taking place on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th March 2018.
The organisers recorded a record number of early bird entrants wanting to secure their place on the start line of this fantastic celebration of running.
A range of flexible packages are also offered by the race organisers, ensuring minimum hassle and maximum enjoyment on race weekend.
The 2017 race took place under blue skies on 18th and 19th March, and welcomed a record 15,000 runners to the island’s largest sporting event. The race is known for being flat and fast, covering long stretches of straight, traffic-free road, including the spectacular coastal road of greater Limassol. This makes it ideal for first time marathon runners as well as for professional athletes looking to achieve a PB.
The 2017 men’s marathon title was claimed by Edwin Kiprop Kiyeng with a time of 02:15:04, and Gladys Jepkurui Biwott secured the women’s title with a time of 02:40:41.
Now entering its 12th year, the OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO is fully accredited by AIMS, the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races.
The 26.2-mile route takes runners from the palm tree-lined seafront of Molos, in the centre of Limassol, to the new port, the old harbour and the ancient ruins of the Royal City of Amathus, dating from 1100 BC. It stretches for 21km along the beautiful Mediterranean coastline, reaching a maximum altitude of 18m and providing runners with magnificent views and a refreshing sea breeze. Add pleasant spring temperatures of 9-17°C, and low rainfall in March, and it really is an ideal location to run a strong race.
The OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO offers a number of different races over race weekend.
Race weekend will officially start on Saturday 17th March, with the PrimeTel 5K Corporate Race and the Andrey and Julia Dashin’s Foundation 1K Youth Race. The PrimeTel 5K Corporate Race was the most popular race at the 2017 event, offering businesses a unique team building opportunity as well as a great chance to encourage fitness in the work place.
Sunday 18th March will then host the OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO, the Half Marathon, the Petrolina 10K Energy Race and the 5K City Race.
Together these races offer a complete sporting experience for all ages and abilities, which is very much embraced by the thousands of participants and spectators who come to the start line to cheer the participants on. Overseas visitors can expect a friendly and celebratory atmosphere in a beautiful seaside location, as well as the highest international running standards.
With the organisers keen to build on the success of 2017 and deliver yet another first-class event, the 2018 event will feature many exciting additions based on feedback received. More details will be announced, but athletes can look forward to a new and improved course for the Marathon, 5K City Race and the 5K Corporate Race.
