The very first Oswestry Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 30th April 2017 and promises to be a day of family fun in a unique and spectacular location.
Shropshire’s newest running event is organised by UKRunChat Events, the team behind the highly successful Shrewsbury Half Marathon which debuted in June 2016. Uptake for the Oswestry Half Marathon has been extremely positive and the event sold out over a month before race day.
The course for the Oswestry Half Marathon begins and ends at the British Ironwork Centre Sculpture Park, where runners will be treated to an experience like no other. With magnificent animal sculptures and beautiful metal work on display in the 90-acre grounds, plus the astonishing Knife Angel and the Uri Geller spoon gorilla, it makes for a superb day out as well as a stunning location for a race.
The very first Oswestry Half Marathon will certainly open in style, with a 3-cannon salute at the start of the race, a silver band playing Chariots of Fire at the start line and a 20ft gold gorilla sculpture being specially created for the start line.
After warming up among the life-size animal sculptures, the first km of the closed road race takes runners through the Sculpture Park past life-like wildebeest, cheetahs, elephants and gorillas, an exclusive international collection of carefully sculpted designs. Different sculptures are then dotted along the course, which along with musical entertainment will keep motivation high on race day.
The route for the Oswestry Half Marathon takes runners through the friendly border town of Oswestry, where the English and Welsh street names reflect how the settlement passed from English to Welsh rule in years gone by. There is a fantastic hill to challenge runners between miles 6 and 7, before a gradual decline all the way back to the finish line, making for a fast second half and a great chance to run a PB.
As the runners head back into the Sculpture Park and cross the finish line they will receive an impressive medal, produced by the British Ironworks, as a lasting memory of their experience at this unique venue. They will also receive a finishers’ technical t-shirt and goody bag. Free pre- and post-race massages are available.
Trophies will be awarded to the overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed male and female, and to the first placed male and female in the following age categories: 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65+.
For many, the Oswestry Half Marathon marks the beginning of a festival of Bank Holiday activities for the whole family. With falconry displays, food stalls, activities for children, free parking and an on-site café, the race is expected to attract plenty of competitors, family and friends to its spring debut.
