5th December 2017
“A few changes to my newsletter and most likely my last update of 2017. I’ve been very busy in November and enjoyed every minute. Have a great festive season, and here is my latest!” Lewis Crathern
Roedean School Visit
Roedean School, one of the most beautifully situated schools in Sussex, invited me to speak to their students. Once again using Kitesurfing as my engagement tool, I covered some great topics including Reading, Relationships and Recycling. When talking about ‘taking care of the environment’ I could point straight out to sea from the school’s grounds to the amazing Rampion Wind Farm. Renewable energy is especially effortless to convey when you combine such a visual landmark with the exciting sport of Kitesurfing. Thanks for having me, Roedean.
Egypt World Kiteboarding League
For the fourth stop of the World Kiteboarding League we headed to El Gouna in Egypt. Arguably one of the most success events of the year, the wind blew non-stop which produced results in both the Ladies and Men fleets. Bruna Kajiya from Brazil took another convincing win and Carlos Mario also from Brazil set the highest heat score ever, earning 1st. The WKL produced another great Live Stream show and even 5X World Champion and good friend Aaron Hadlow joined me to broadcast all the excitement over the internet. The next event takes place from the 7th December in Brazil, so please check in at www.worldkiteboardingleague.co
November Coaching with Lewis Crathern
Starting off possibly the busiest month of coaching I’ve ever had, I set off on a 6 hour drive to North Wales to coach riders from CBK Hunstanton. For a full weekend we had an amazing time together in perfect conditions. By performing a live ‘on the water demo’ as my participants arrived, I was able to offer some really in-depth coaching tips. I plug my Bb Talkin device into my van, gather the students around and then hit the water. Like magic they can hear me over my vehicle’s audio system! You just have to watch this video I made of it.
On the Saturday evening I ran one of my ‘Kitesurfing Pub Quizzes’ which are great fun and we raised £125 for the Armada Trust. Windguru kindly offered Pro Accounts for all winners with Venue Hosts The Oyster Catcher also donating. I’d also like to thank FunSport & James for such a warm welcome to Rhosneigr.
Later on in the month I headed up to Whitstable to coach the London Kitesurfers Club. They are a great bunch of riders of all abilities. This would be the 2nd time in 2017 that I would work with them. When you are motivated, temperatures like 0 degrees wind chill* never put you off and we powered through a great day of action in the sun on the North Kent Coast. In the afternoon I was able to provide yet another live demo with my Bb Talkin device and Mark filmed some great Drone footage of it you can see here. Thanks Boardworx for helping to host the day. Whitstable is like a second home to me, I’ve spent a lot of time there since I started Kitesurfing 15 years ago and it’s always great to go back.
Windguru as a mobile app
The Windguru website now works as a “Progressive Web App”. This means that you can install and use it just like an app on your phone. No need to go to app store / play store… you can do it right from the website. No need to download app updates later, Windguru will self-update automatically.
I love it! I can now use Windguru quickly from an icon on my Ipad’s home screen (no need to start my browser anymore), it will run in fullscreen mode and it even supports (limited) offline use.
Filming with Back2Back Productions
UK-based Back2back Productions have started a new series exploring the world of stunts called ‘Stunt Science’. The series features stories and clips of stunts and home experiments caught on camera. You probably guessed it, yes, they are covering my ‘Pier Jumps‘ from all those years ago. It always amazes me how frequently production companies get in contact in relation to the jumps and as I’ve mentioned, on 3 or 4 occasions each year I get to be part of a show like this.
The series breaks down the most shocking and surprising manoeuvres, explaining in detail how the tricks were done. The 10 x 60-minute program will be known as Stunt Science by Viasat World, and Outrageous Stunts! by Spike UK. The series is being distributed by Hat Trick International.
It’s always great coverage for me and my hometown of Worthing and I’ve learnt a lot about being on camera from experiences like this.

That’s it for now. Next up for me is a trip to Brazil for the final WKL Event of the year. It’s going to be a cracker!
