Welcome to our last instalment for Susie Chan for the year, and what a year 2017 has been! By early December Susie had clocked over 2,000 miles of running this year, which is a phenomenal distance.

It is a fitting way to round off what has undoubtedly been an incredible 12 months for her. From winning the Adventure category of the Coastal Challenge Costa Rica in February, to taking part in the legendary Marathon des Sables for the third time in April, to completing the London Classics in September and becoming a Six Star Finisher at the World Marathon Majors in October, Susie’s year has been nothing short of inspiring.

Read on for more of what Susie has been up to the last few weeks, and a sneak peek at what we have to look forward to in 2018!

Susie Chan Intersport1. Intersport at Intersport HQ

In early December Susie was proud to attend one of the Intersport quarterly shows where she was presented to all Intersport retailers as the first official Intersport ambassador. She gave a great speech about what she does and was delighted when Intersport presented her with a Nike women’s training sparkle pack – which those who follow her on Twitter will know included some fabulous sparkle run tights! It is a huge honour for Susie to be the first Intersport ambassador and her sponsorship with Intersport promises to bring lots of exciting things for 2018.

2. Running in Fitness Course

The exciting news is that Susie has started her official qualification for run coaching, the UK Athletics Coaching in Running Fitness course. It is an intense 4-day course run by UK Athletics and Susie is hoping to translate what she learns into coaching her own clients. She has also found the course has helped her to pay attention and strive to improve her own running form too!

In the run-up to Christmas Susie is taking part in the XNRG Santa Virtual Ultra Challenge, a fun new addition to the UK running calendar. A great way to keep motivated during the short days and long nights of December, participants have to run as many miles as they can between 1st-24th December, completing at least 50km in one day. So far Susie has been diligently clocking up the km on roads and trails in all weather. Good luck Susie!

Susie is looking forward to running the Portsmouth Coastal Waterside Marathon on 17th December with her friend Charlotte Hanson. They are pictured here doing Charlotte’s first ever 20-miler as a training run. It’s Charlotte’s first marathon and Susie bought her the place as a birthday present! It might be cold but the Christmas cheer, mulled wine, brandy and Jaffa cakes will make it a marathon to remember! Good luck ladies…

5. Susie Chan is number 1 Runner on Instagram!

Susie Chan InstagramSusie appeared as the no. 1 runner to follow on Instagram, as recommended by Runner’s World! Congratulations Susie for being not just an inspiring runner, but brilliant with words and pictures too. Runner’s World sums it up perfectly: “Susie has enthusiastically chronicled her journey on social media, entertaining her following with heart-on-sleeve musings, jokes, moans, trademark on-the-run selfies, midrace rants from deep inside multi-day ultras, as well as daily updates from her bulldog, Roy.” Susie has a dedicated following of over 11K on Instagram alone – join her here.

6. Samsung Gear Sport Launch

Susie had a fantastic day with the Samsung team testing out their excellent new Gear Sport smart watch and Gear Icon headphones, followed by a brilliant sushi dinner in central London. It is testament to how well-respected Susie is within the running industry that she receives such invitations from high profile brands and events. We are incredibly proud to be supporting Susie and excited at all that lies ahead for her!

7. Hosting talks

Susie Chan WMN RUNSusie has delivered a few talks to runners wanting to know more about her adventures and achievements! First up was a Q&A for runners in Guildford interested in her Six Star journey (Susie completed the World Marathon Majors in Chicago in October), then a talk about the Marathon des Sables to ultra runners at the Druids multi-stage ultra (Susie has completed the legendary Marathon des Sables three times), and finally a talk at the WMN RUN event in London along with coach Becs Gentry and speedy 2.37 marathoner Anna Boniface (pictured above). Whether you are taking your first steps in running or wanting to up the ante to an ultra, Susie is full of encouragement and always keen to share her first-hand tips!

8. Susie featured in Strava’s Year in Sport report

Susie Chan Strava

A keen runner on Strava, and one of 36 global athletes selected earlier this year to represent Strava’s Athletes Posts, Susie is delighted to be featured in Strava’s annual Year in Sport report. Providing a fascinating insight into the behaviours and trends of Britain’s runners, the round-up of 2017 shows Susie pacing runners to a sub-4 time at the London Marathon just a week after completing the 250km Marathon des Sables. Now whether Susie contributed to coffee and cake being voted the most popular foods for runners is another matter…

9. Christmas celebrations with Greenacre

Back in October we revealed that Susie had confirmed sponsorship with private investment company Greenacre Capital, and Susie is quite rightly looking forward to the end of year celebrations with Greenacre. We’re looking forward to seeing what the sponsorship deal will bring in 2018!

10. Final race of the year…

Not one for using Christmas as an excuse to put her feet up, Susie is looking forward to her final race of the year, the Boxing Day Fun Run 2017 at The Devil’s Punch Bowl in Hindhead. The traditional 3.5-mile race on 26th December offers a pint of ale at two miles, which Susie is more than happy to accept, whilst running up and down the course in fancy dress!

11. Over 2,000 miles in December, and still counting!

Susie ChanAhead of next year’s ultra marathons, Susie has been racking up the miles in 2017 and went over the 2,000-mile marker earlier this month. Check out her impressive Strava profile here. She’s certainly putting in all the training required for the extreme challenges of Pilgrims Ultra (February), the Badwater Cape Fear (March), the Marathon des Sables (yes! A FOURTH time – April), the Keys 100 Ultramarathon (May) and more. What a year 2018 is looking to be…and we’ll be following you all the way, Susie!

But always remember: in Susie’s own words, it doesn’t matter whether you run 200 miles or 3000 miles, fast or slowly – be proud of them 😊

So it is that we round off 2017 with a respectful bow to Susie Chan for achieving so much and for inspiring so many people. 2018 will be a year of ultras but we will also see Susie commentating at various events, including the inaugural and highly anticipated British Airways Run Gatwick (13th May) and the Shrewsbury Half Marathon (17th June), and co-presenting at the highly anticipated National Running Show (20th-21st January). Her coaching is also taking off and she has plenty more in the pipeline to look forward to.

Susie has come so far in just six years of running that it is incredibly exciting to see what else she is capable of…2018 here we come!
