Champions Relay Team at ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon

A team of Manchester Marathon Champions running the 4 Leg Relay in this year’s ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon has been unveiled.
Dr Ron Hill, Steve Kenyon, Bashir Hussain and Jackie Newton, all from Greater Manchester, will be forming the Champions Relay Team and joining the running crowd on 19th April.
Dr Ron Hill, who won the Manchester Marathon in 1969 and 1971, has been actively supporting the race since it was brought back in 2012 after a decade’s absence, and he has secured an outstanding relay team comprising of former Manchester Marathon winners. Steve Kenyon ran the fastest time at a Manchester Marathon in 1981 (2:11:54) and Bashir Hussain had a hat trick of wins between 1996 and 1998. Jackie Newton won the women’s race in 1998.
Athletics legend Dr Ron Hill will also be starting the race alongside ASICS ambassador Mara Yamauchi before running the 1st leg of the team relay. Steve Kenyon will run the 2nd leg, with Jackie Newton running the 3rd leg and Bashir Hussain taking on the last and longest leg before crossing the finish line at Old Trafford.
The ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon takes place on Sunday 19th April and is the UK’s flattest, fastest and friendliest marathon. The race was voted the UK’s Best Marathon by The Running Awards 2014 and it also won the Most Improved Race at the Runner’s World Personal Best Awards last year. Renowned for its outstanding crowd support and unique entertainment around the course, the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon starts and finishes near the Manchester United Football Club in Old Trafford.
Public entries are closed but limited charity places are still available. Cancer Research UK, The Christie charity and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity are the official charities for the 2015 race, further details can be found at www.greatermanchestermarathon.com/charities/ .
Metrolink is the official sponsor of the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon team relays, offering free tram travel to and from the race village for all relay runners showing their race number. A two for one voucher is also available to download from the race’s website which allows friends and families to get around the course and cheer on the runners at various points throughout their marathon challenge. The voucher entitles the holder to free travel to, from and around the marathon course if they are accompanied by a full fare paying adult passenger with a valid Metrolink ticket.
