Ffit Conwy Llandudno Sea Triathlon review

Impressive elite field and age group performances
at Ffit Conwy Llandudno Sea Triathlon

The 7th Ffit Conwy Llandudno Sea Triathlon took place on Sunday 5th July and saw many outstanding performances. The Ffit Conwy Llandudno Sea Triathlon is set amongst spectacular scenery from the start on the beach to the stunning views around the Great Orme and it attracts athletes of all levels, with many club and GB age group athletes competing in North Wales year after year.

Both the standard and the sprint distance triathlon incorporated the thrill of a sea swim followed by a cycle on closed roads around the Great Orme with a challenging climb, fast descent and glorious views over the North Wales Coast. The cycle leg also featured a part of the Tour of Britain route. The run route went out along the Victorian Promenade before heading over the Little Orme to Penrhyn Bay and back to finish on the promenade.

Phil Wolfe of Mammoth Lifestyle RT took the men’s title in the standard distance race in a time of 02:03:17, nearly seven minutes faster than Ian Lawton’s winning time in 2014. Wolfe exited the water in first place and managed to hold on to the lead throughout the race. Paul Hawkins and Christopher Silver of University of Birmingham Tri Club were battling it out for 2nd place but despite a quick run Silver could not close the gap. Hawkins finished in 02:05:21, ahead of Silver in 02:05:53.

Alice Sharpe_Llandudno Sea Tri 2015_stdAlice Sharpe of Manchester Triathlon Club, who had won the sprint distance race at Llandudno in 2014 as well as the Peak District Triathlon at Chatsworth a week earlier, dominated the women’s field and powered away on the bike after a fast swim. Sharpe finished in excellent 7th overall place and claimed the women’s title in an impressive time of 02:18:03. Katie Latham of South Cheshire Harriers emerged out of the water over four and a half minutes after Lisa Cox but overtook Cox in T2 and managed to stay ahead and extend her lead on the run leg, claiming 2nd place in a time of 02:49:03. Cox took third place after crossing the finish line in 02:52:24.

The sprint distance race saw outstanding performances from Jonathan Chatten and Nathan Veall who J Chatten _Llandudno Sea Tri 2015_sprintboth raced in the 15-19 age category, and female winner Rhian Roxburgh who claimed overall 3rd place. Chatten, of North West Regional Academy, dominated the field from the start and claimed the winning title after finishing in 01:04:58. Runner up Nathan Veall of York Triathlon Club finished in 01:06:50, and Phillip Lynes came third in 01:11:19. Rhian Roxburgh of GOG Triathlon Club clocked the second fastest swim of the overall field and secured the women’s title in an excellent time of 01:10:54, over eight and a half minutes ahead of runner up Alex Aldous (GOG Triathlon Club) who finished in 01:19:36. Jayne Treanor took third place after crossing the finish line in 01:24:43.
