Welcome to Lewis Crathern’s new look newsletter! Here’s what he got up to in July…

WOO Sports Brighton Big Air Comp

Lewis Crathern July

This year’s Paddle Round The Pier event saw the inclusion of kitesurfing in the programme. Over 20 people took part in the WOO sports big air event that I helped to organise. Perfect 25 knot winds arrived on cue and riders were boosting high into the sky. Prizes included a selection of Mystic gear, WOO sports merch and Windguru Pro accounts. Congrats to Rich.D, Ania.P & Leigh.T for finishing on top in the Big Air and Hangtime classes!

NCS Brighton

The National Citizen Service (abbreviated to NCS) is a British voluntary personal and social development programme for 16- and 17-year-olds in England and Northern Ireland. For their summer scheme I joined up to run some Kite flying sessions. On 3 occasions I spent the whole afternoon with 3 groups. We don’t just fly kites! I like to engage them with all sorts of subjects like what their next plans in life might be. I also like explain the importance of looking for opportunities. It’s very positive and always amazes me how flying kites can bring people out of their shell.

Lyndhurst School Visit

Lewis Crathern July

Lyndhurst School invited me in to speak to their children. It’s a special school to me, as it’s my first one less than a mile from my family home.

This had to be the most interesting visit to a school I have ever had as the children’s studies had been focused all around me! Some questions about my career I couldn’t even reply to, yet from their research they all knew the answer! Always a pleasure to go back, and lovely to see the amazing artwork they had made.

Cyprus King of Kite

Lewis Crathern July

The Cyprian Championships known as ‘The King of Kite’ took place just up the road from Larnaca. Kahuna SurfHouse had been in touch with me about commentating and judging the event, and as I had never visited Cyprus I jumped at the chance to get involved.

Lewis Crathern JulyI was so impressed by the set up at the spot, which completely welcomed all levels of kiteboarders and the general public. This balance is so important to bring new people into the sport as well as to create a platform for the top guys as well. Thanks for having me! (Elias, Angie and Liam who are behind Kahuna SurfHouse are pictured with me here).

If you’re thinking of heading somewhere warm, friendly, consistently windy and extremely quick to get to from Europe, I couldn’t recommend this place more.
