Matt Barnes and Steph Banns claim the wins at Wilmslow Triathlon

Wilmslow Triathlon

The Wilmslow Triathlon took place yesterday Sunday 14th May and saw 637 athletes cross the finish line of this popular sprint distance triathlon in the leafy Cheshire town of Wilmslow. It was the 11th anniversary of the race which attracts athletes of all levels and sells out well in advance each year.

The event began at 7am with a 400m swim in the 5-lane, 25m pool at the Wilmslow Leisure Centre before competitors headed out into the picturesque Cheshire countryside for a 24.2km, mostly flat, cycle, followed by a 6.3km run. The course is always greatly enjoyed for following a quiet and mainly flat route on the Cheshire plains, with the cycle taking in Ashley and Mobberley and the run taking competitors around east Wilmslow.

Wilmslow TriathlonMatt Barnes of Manchester Triathlon Club got off to a strong start in the water and although he clocked a slightly slower cycle than his two main rivals, his fast run assured him of the men’s title with a time of 01:05:45, just over a minute ahead of second placed Paul Hawkins, from peaks-performance.com. Cole Drews of Team Tri Guru came in half a minute later to claim third place.

In the women’s race, Steph Banns put in a fantastic performance to be first female out the water and at the front of the women’s Wilmslow Triathlonfield in both the cycle and run. She claimed the women’s title in a time of 01:16:25, a comfortable four and a half minutes ahead of Emily Newton from Royal Navy Tri Club, who took second place. Third place was claimed by Charlotte Edmondson just over half a minute later.

In the Sprint Distance Swycle, consisting of the swim and cycle legs but no run, William Price took the men’s title while Gill Myers claimed the women’s and overall title.

In the Sprint Distance Aquathlon, consisting of a 400m swim and a 5km run, Michael Kar Mann Lim won the men’s race and Kate Hebden the women’s race.
