Peak District Triathlon at Chatsworth review

The magnificent grounds of Chatsworth House played host to the Peak District Triathlon at Chatsworth yesterday, one of the toughest and most popular events on the UK triathlon calendar.
It is the third year that the world-class triathlon has taken place at this scenic country estate in Derbyshire and it has proved to be the biggest year yet, with race organisers Xtra Mile Events reporting a sell out event with 1,000 registered competitors.
The Peak District Triathlon at Chatsworth was an ETU European Sprint Distance Championship Qualifier and as such attracted high calibre athletes from across the country.
Offering both sprint and standard distance race options, this family-friendly event combines an iconic race with a day out at one of the country’s finest stately homes, and there were certainly plenty of spectators at Chatsworth enjoying the swimming, cycling and running action.
The first wave of swimmers were in the water at 7am, the river Derwent and its 18th century Paine’s Bridge providing a beautiful setting for the first leg of the triathlon, and this was followed by a bike ride in stunning Peak District countryside and a picturesque run in Chatsworth’s expansive parkland. Both runs were a single lap, with an extended section beyond the Hunting Tower for the standard distance athletes to incorporate more of the estate’s impressive landmarks.
Seb Garry was third out of the water but after taking the lead on a fast bike leg he managed to stay ahead and won the standard distance race in 02:07:45. Runner up Thomas Morris finished in 02:10:45 and Pete Shuttleworth (Belper 10:20 Triathlon Club), who had clocked the fastest swim time, claimed third place in 02:14:29.
In the women’s race Hannah Bridger of Stockport Tri Club was in fourth position after the swim leg but she secured the win in 02:32:54 thanks to her fast times on both on the bike and the run. Josephine Mullane of Stafford Tri Club claimed second place on the podium in 02:35:31, ahead of Louise Gubb of TRI2O who finished in 02:40:00
In the sprint race Benjamin Goodall of Durham University Tri Club put in a super fast swim which put him in the lead. Alex Lawton of Torq Fitness tried to chase him down in the run leg but Goodall managed to hold on to the lead and won in a time of 01:05:08, nine seconds ahead of Lawton. Andrey Brightwell of Medway Tri took third place in 01:06:31.
The women’s race saw Rhian Roxburgh of GOG Triathlon claim the top spot on the podium after crossing the finish line in 01:14:33. Harriet Hughes of Serpentine Running Club) secured second place in 01:17:48 and Erica Booth of Tri-Rivington UK took third place in 01:19:21, after beating Claire Danson into fourth place by one second.

Race Director Simon Hill commented: “We are thrilled with the turnout at this year’s Peak District Triathlon at Chatsworth, which has just got bigger and better over the last three years. In addition to a record-breaking number of competitors, we welcomed hundreds of spectators who came to enjoy the magnificent setting of Chatsworth House, the River Derwent and the beautiful Peak District countryside. It was great to see supporters, young and old, cheer on the athletes as they completed each section of the course and crossed the finish line. Overall there was a fantastic atmosphere and a huge sense of achievement, complemented by beautiful weather.
“We would like to thank all the staff of the house, gardens and estate for their support in bringing this event together. Many thanks also to our sponsors, volunteers, spectators, fundraisers and of course competitors for providing us with a truly exciting triathlon that has become a firm favourite on the UK triathlon scene.”
