Run for Climate Change to support charities, communities, the planet and mental health
One Running Movement (ORM), a collaborative evolution for movement and change #MoveForLife, announced a Powered By Partnership with Planet-U Energy back in June. One Running Movement have now unveiled the details of their latest initiative which is supported by Planet-U Energy as well as their Foundation Partners.
Run For Climate Change is a new annual event, with the first edition taking place virtually this year. There is one huge point of difference with this virtual event – runners don’t just get a wooden medal that is ethically and sustainably sourced whilst supporting local communities, for every entry received a tree is planted in Yorkshire by Planet-U Energy with a biodegradable plaque featuring the runner’s name, a nominated name or name of a loved one. A picture of the tree will be sent to each runner within 12 months of it being planted. £2 of the entry fee is also donated to environmental and mental health charities.
With running and movement such a large contributing factor to mental health, the organisers have announced that registrations for Run for Climate Change 2020 open on World Mental Health Day which is observed on 10th October each year.
Runners of all ages can sign up to run a chosen distance of 5K, 10K, Half Marathon or Marathon, in line with movers health and wellbeing goals, and by doing so they contribute to the following:
- Helping yourself by being active and having a positive goal to aim or train for
- Helping the planet by raising awareness of climate change and renewable energy
- Helping communities where the wooden medals are made
- Helping charities who are committed to climate change and mental health
Samaritans and Surfers Against Sewage have been confirmed as the benefiting charities from the Run for Climate Change entries with £1 from each entry donated to each charity.
Registrations for #RunForClimateChange open this Saturday 10th October at 10.10 am, and runners can complete their pledged distance from the end of October to the end of December 2020. Different entries are available for individuals, families or businesses, with adult entry (age 17+) at £12 and children / young adults entry (age 16 and under) at £6, with everyone receiving the same rewards.
All entries include a wooden medal and a tree planted by Planet-U Energy for each runner. Supporting materials regarding training, renewable energy and climate change will be available on the One Running Movement online education channel, developing further in 2021. Medals will be sent out from November and trees will be planted in Yorkshire from December.
A mileage marker will track the accumulated distance pledged to run by every participant, with the aim to run around the world by 2022 and cover the distance of the earth’s circumference, as measured around the equator (40,075.017 km or 24,901.461 miles).
A total of 2,000 places are being launched on the 10th October at 10.10am for 2020 virtual Run For Climate Change event.
Grant Nicholson, Chief Executive of Planet-U Energy said: “Planet-U Energy has been working closely with One Running Movement over the last few months, and we are pleased to be part of this latest inspirational initiative that comes with so many benefits for the planet, communities, charities and both physical and mental health.
“We at Planet-U Energy feel passionate about tackling social change across all areas as well as renewable energy and climate change. We are proud to be planting trees in Yorkshire as part of this initiative and we are excited to work with ORM and their partners to ensure that our communities and our planet become healthier.”
Joe Williams and Rebecca Richardson, Founders of One Running Movement, added: “In today’s world there are many factors that affect mental health, and climate change plays a big role with the future of our planet at risk. We are excited to launch Run for Climate Change as an annual virtual event to start, and we will announcing further news over the coming months.
“We are calling these ‘honesty runs’ and we feel that everybody needs to make a personal commitment in line with own health and wellbeing goals, from a choice to run 5K, 10K, Half Marathon or Marathon distance, our movers pledge the miles. Trees are the ultimate carbon capture and storage machines so to speak, and it’s amazing that runners can contribute to Planet-U Energy planting trees at one of their Yorkshire locations for each Run for Climate Change entry received. Climate change is also closely linked to mental health and anxiety for many, and we are excited to offer an event in collaboration with Planet-U Energy that addresses both.”
“We are proud to be creating valuable funds through Run For Climate Change for Surfers Against Sewage and Samaritans. We have pledged to donate £1 to each charity equally for every runner that takes part. We are creating an equilibrium and raising awareness about the connection between environment changes, movement and mental health by all working together.”
