The Eirias Triathlon Festival Review
The 4th Eirias Middle Distance+ and Standard Distance+ Triathlons took place in Colwyn Bay, North Wales, on Saturday 26th September, blessed with sunshine and warmer than average temperatures.
The event is based at a stunning seafront triathlon venue with world class facilities and features a sea swim at Porth Eirias, an epic cycle route in the Welsh hills and a coastal run. Supporters and spectators had made their way to the hub of the event at the Porth Eirias Watersports Complex, where they watched the swim in the sea, the excitement in the transition area and applauded the athletes crossing the finish line.
ERDINGER Alkoholfrei handed out ice cold samples of the isotonic recovery drink to triathletes at the finish, which was a popular addition to the race and contributed to the great atmosphere.
A free open top bus tour of the cycle route took place on the evening before the race and saw athletes and their families on board to listen to the commentary and technical hints from the Raceforce cycle expert.
Tom Williams of Total Tri Training was first out of the water in the Middle Distance+ race and managed to hold on to the lead throughout, finishing in 05:21:23. Runner up Sam Green of GOG Triathlon secured second place in 05:22:07 after a fast run, and Robert Wilson of Knutsford Triathlon Club came third in 05:28:56. The women’s race was won by Sarah Harrison of Sheffield Tri Club in 05:59:05, ahead of Kirsty Murray who finished in 06:04:38 and Pauline Griffin (Manchester Triathlon Club) in 06:10;59.
In the Standard Distance+ race Daniel McParland of City of Lancaster Tri Club clocked the third fastest swim time but
secured the lead on the bike leg and won the race in a time of 02:47:26. Gordon Kilroy of Wakefield Triathlon Club claimed second place after putting in a fast run and crossed the finish line in 02:57:12, ahead of Richard Perry of Mersey Tri Club who finished in 02:58:52. Traci Shipley of Chester Tri Club won the women’s race in 03:20:03 after taking the lead on the bike leg.
