April has been a fantastic month for Susie as it saw her complete her fourth Marathon des Sables – a race close to her heart, with people close to her heart. She also has her third ultra of the year coming up in May, so it’s all about hot weather training at the moment! Sit back and be inspired, and let’s keep our fingers crossed for more sunshine here too…

1. Preparation for Keys 100 – late April

Susie Chan

Susie’s third ultra of the year is Keys 100 Ultramarathon on 19th-20t May, a spectacular but gruelling 100-mile race in the sub-tropical Florida Keys. In preparation for the heat and humidity – to say nothing of the distance – Susie has recently been training in 38-degree heat in Dubai, and will continue with heat chamber training in London as the race draws close. She has also of course had the recent Marathon des Sables (see point 3) to help her acclimatise.

It’s an amazing effort to run at such temperatures and we wish Susie the very best of luck when she heads to the US for her 3rd ultra in the space of three months!

2. Running with Lily Partridge – 25th April

Just a few days after British runner Lily Partridge clocked an incredible 2:29 PB at the Virgin Money London Marathon, Susie found herself out for a curry with her friend and going for a run in the Surrey hills, close to where they both live.

Two phenomenal female runners together – what an inspiration to us all!

3. Marathon des Sables – 6th-16th April

Susie’s big event in April was her 4th Marathon des Sables, and we’re delighted that Susie enjoyed an incredible race this year. It was a very special time for Susie as not only has she recently recovered from thyroid cancer, this time she was returning to the Sahara with her husband, friend and close running buddy Sophie Raworth (who she met four years ago at Boston Marathon and has run with ever since).

Competitors are self-sufficient for 250km and have to carry all their food, sleeping gear and survival kit for the week; water is rationed and they share open-sided berber tents on the desert floor at night. They all shared an extraordinary experience, plenty of unforgettable moments, endless jokes and deep friendship.

Susie had a great day at Box Hill with the Whole Earth Foods team, getting ready for the Man v Horse race on 9th June.

This epic 22-mile race in mid Wales has seen very close finishes between man and the horse and we’ll be watching to see whether this will be the year that man (or woman) beats the first horse and rider to win the escalating jackpot!

5. Virgin Money London Marathon Expo – 19th April

On her social platforms Susie also gave some valuable advice to runners ahead of what was set to be the hottest London Marathon on record, to help them deal with the heat. Susie has run and paced the marathon many times, and there is little she doesn’t know about preparing for a big race!

6. Co-hosting The National Running Show 2019

It was announced in April that Susie will be co-hosting The National Running Show 2019 with Ben Smith from The 401 Challenge. Susie co-hosted the inaugural show in 2018 to great success and she can’t wait to return to this must-visit event for runners!

National Running Show 2019Taking place on 19th-20th January 2019 at Birmingham’s NEC, this innovative expo gathers thousands of runners under one roof alongside sports brands, retailers, nutrition experts, race organisers, communities and expert speakers. The speaker programme is one of the highlights of the show and visitors can expert to be wowed by a fantastic line-up of Olympic gold medal winners, global adventurers and endurance runners. Tickets are now on sale on the event website, costing £10 for the whole weekend.

7. ASICS #IMoveMe campaign

Susie Chan ASICSWhilst Susie was doing Marathon des Sables she received lots of amazing messages of support from friends, family and followers, which she was incredibly grateful to receive as she crossed the Sahara. While Susie was away it was great to see her photo on a billboard at the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon, leading on from the #IMoveMe campaign she did with ASICS last month.

Susie is perfect for the IMOVEME campaign and both the image and video have enjoyed international reach as the campaign continues to inspire movement across the world.

8. Intersport competition winners announced

During March, Susie worked with Intersport and ASICS on a fabulous competition to win one of 10 TomTom Bandit Action cameras. Entrants had to share their favourite run view by means of a photo or short video on Instagram or Twitter, and Susie loved looking through all the #runwithaview entries! It was a great competition to celebrate all the amazing places we run, whether that’s your local parkrun or further afield. Congratulations to the winners!

Good luck Susie at Keys 100 and with all your running adventures this coming month – we will be reporting back at the end of May!
