Susie had a quieter month during August to rest a niggly Achilles, so she clocked fewer miles but maintained fitness – and in fact came back stronger – through cross training. Read on to find out what she’s been up to!
1. Weekend in Portugal finalising The Campus Run Academy – 31st August
With Susie’s Campus Run Academy approaching fast (4th-7th October), Susie spent a weekend at Quinta do Lago finalising the run routes and final trip details. Susie will be hosting The Campus Run Academy with top British female marathon athlete Lily Partridge and it promises to be a superb few days for anyone wishing to take their running to the next level. It is open to all abilities of runner wanting to experience professional coaching and exclusive workshops within a unique sport and wellness environment.
The 4-day / 3-night camp includes: exclusive nutritional and recovery workshops; group training; interval sessions; guided runs; luxury accommodation; a tailored training schedule by Susie and Lily and much more – all in a stunning coastal setting on the Algarve. Last couple of places now available! Find out more at www.fortesportsmanagement.com.
2. Recovering from an Achilles injury
Every runner dreads an injury and a painful Achilles is one of the most frustrating to deal with. Susie had to take a break from running during August in order to let her Achilles heal, but that doesn’t mean she’s been sitting down doing nothing. Walking her dog, cycling, open water swimming, hot yoga, boxing and gym sessions have kept her fit and strong, and the odd low mileage run has kept her sane!
In fact, by the end of August Susie was reporting that she felt much stronger from the cross training, proving that treating an injury is not all bad news. We’re glad to hear that the physio, exercises and rest have all helped and that Susie is back on her feet ready for more adventures in September!
3. Superhero Tri – 18th August
Susie had a lovely day with children’s charity Challengers at the heartwarming Superhero Tri, a disability sports event for everyday superheroes. She was honoured to be part of little superhero Toby’s team!
4. Article in Run Ultra – 13th August
Susie wrote an article in Run Ultra about her experience crewing Badwater in July. It’s a fascinating read of what life is like as crew, and it’s impressive to learn that Susie ran the equivalent of an ultra herself just in crewing duties! It’s certainly not a job for the faint-hearted, but it’s crucial support for any runner taking on this 135-mile race in one of the hottest places on Earth, Death Valley. Well done Susie and team!
5. Kelly’s Charity Events route recce – 13th August
Susie has had a couple of enjoyable route testing runs for Kelly’s Charity Events, who offer 5K, 10K and Half Marathon charity race trails.
Susie ran the 10K trail at Loseley Park which was stunning, and didn’t mind getting caught in a tropical summer shower!
6. Planning for 2019 is under way!
We always expect exciting things from Susie and she has already announced a fantastic line-up of events for 2019.
Susie will be returning to the epic Coastal Challenge Costa Rica in February (where she won the Adventure Category in 2017) and has also confirmed Badwater Cape Fear in March (where she came 3rd placed female this year) as well as the Badwater Salton Sea team race in April, where she is planning on putting together a female UK team. For this race, runners have to stay within metres of their team mates along the entire 81-mile course. That’s a lot of mileage in the first part of the year and we can’t wait to follow Susie’s training and progress!
7. Yateley 10K – 1st August
We’re used to seeing Susie run ultras so it was great to see her take on the Yateley 10K with her Farnham Runners friends. It was her first 10K in three years and she admits that she doesn’t have much confidence in the distance, but running with friends is a huge support and Susie had her confidence restored by a great race.
8. Intersport Kit – 1st August
As an ambassador for Intersport, Susie was delighted to receive a bundle of new kit to set her up for the season ahead. Susie loves the Pro Touch by Intersport range for offering great value, stylish and technical kit, and she is often seen wearing it out on training runs and at races. And as we all know, you can never have too much running gear!
