The West Sussex Primary Schools Half Marathon Challenge takes place on Sunday 14th July 2019 at 9am.
It forms part of The Running Festival at Goodwood #RunFestGoodwood which includes a Family 1.1 Mile, 10K and Half Marathon races.
The event will see hundreds of children aged 4-11 complete their very own half marathon challenge at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit. They will run the final 1.1 miles of their cumulative half marathon on race day, having completed the first 12 miles of this exciting challenge at school, over the course of a term or half term.
On event day children will get the full race experience including race bibs, a marshalled route, music and a start and finish line gantry, allowing them to enjoy the thrill of a big sporting event and to be cheered on by friends and family. As they cross the finish line they are presented with their well-earned Half Marathon medal.
The challenge gives youngsters the chance to complete a half marathon in a supportive, non-competitive environment and is a brilliant scheme for schools to get involved with. Once signed up, the children are provided with a dedicated achievement chart so they can log each mile they complete, and each school has a tracker chart for the classroom to log the miles. It’s a great incentive to get children active and it’s also lots of fun for the teachers and parents, many of whom take the opportunity to run with the children each week.
In addition to the physical benefits of regular activity, the Schools Half Marathon promotes inclusion and helps participants to develop resilience, commitment, concentration, organisation, confidence and determination. It also contributes to improved emotional wellbeing and communication skills.
For schools, the Schools Half Marathon represents effective spending of their PE and Sport Premium.
The first Schools Half Marathon officially took place in 2018 as part of Shrewsbury Half Marathon weekend. The event was an overwhelming success, with some 900 children from 21 schools crossing the finish line to scenes of celebration. Due to popular demand, Schools Half Marathon has expanded for 2019 with events now taking place at multiple locations across the UK.
The West Sussex challenge is ideally timed to take place in the second half of the summer term, so children can complete the initial 12 miles of their challenge outdoors at school during the spring / summer terms. The challenge has received a fantastic uptake and friends, family and supporters are encouraged to join us at Goodwood on Sunday 14th July to cheer on our young runners!
Schools Half Marathon is managed by professional running events company UK Run Events, the events channel of #UKRunChat and Breathe Unity.
