Run Windsor Half Marathon for CLIC Sargent with Kyme

Windsor Half Marathon for CLIC Sargent Kyme Jackson

Many people are inspired to enter a sports event to fundraise for a cause close to their heart. At the Windsor Half Marathon on Sunday 25th September 2016, cancer survivor Kyme Jackson from Kings Langley in Hertfordshire will be donning his running shoes to do just that.

Diagnosed with cancer when he was just 20, Kyme is running to raise money for CLIC Sargent, the cancer support charity that helped him through his toughest times and Platinum Charity at this popular 13.1-mile event.

Now 22 and in remission, Kyme tells us how he was diagnosed with cancer whilst studying and working towards a business degree.

“I was really shocked when I was diagnosed with lymphoma, cancer. It was December 2014 and at the time I was in the middle of a work placement for my business degree.  But suddenly all of that was on hold, and just before Christmas I was transferred to University College London Hospital (UCLH) for my first session of chemo.

She explained that she could help me out in lots of different ways, and was somebody I could talk to when things got difficult. Sam left me with some leaflets to read about lymphoma and treatment, and some information about how CLIC Sargent could help. She said that I could speak to her whenever I needed.

“When I came back for my second treatment Sam and I had a good talk about how I was feeling and what I was going through, and it went from there really. She helped me write emails to my employers to explain what was going on so that I’d receive sick pay. And she offered to contact my Uni too.

“CLIC Sargent also helped with grants to cover some of the extra costs I had, like travelling from my home in Hertfordshire to UCLH for treatment, and Sam helped support my mum too.

“My treatment finished in May 2015 and I’m feeling great now. The best I’ve ever felt. I signed up to run the British 10K six weeks after my treatment finished – which was a bit of a struggle as I hadn’t fully recovered. But I did it.

“The Windsor Half Marathon is going to be a massive challenge for me. But when I saw that CLIC Sargent is the official charity for the run I signed up to run with my cousin – even though I don’t have a runner’s physique, in fact I don’t really like running at all!

“We’re hoping to raise as much as we can for this brilliant charity that helped me out so much when I was sick, and I hope it helps them to support more young people and children who are going through cancer now.”
